This project was to design and build a piece of equipment to abrade the surface of a shaping stainless steel shaping ribbon used to manufacture a nickel titanium hybrid medical guidewire. The equipment had to abrade (grit blast) both sides of the ribbon which had a cross section measuring 0.002" x 0.005". The abraded surface had to be sufficiently rough to allow uv (ultra violet) cured glue to adhere to its surface However, abrading the surface of the ribbon removes metal and weakens the ribbon. Therefore, the goal was for the equipment to abrade consistently without reducing the ribbon's longitudinal tensile strength by more than 5%.
